Guru-Shishya to Modern Day Teacher

India, from an outsider’s perspective, was as much a house of knowledge transfer through the able hands of a teacher/guru into the inquisitive mind of a student, as it was a land of snakes and tigers. The perception of a modern-day teacher has unfortunately become that of a person responsible for scoring mark sheets rather than being what Gandhi was to Pandit Nehru – a friend, philosopher and guide. This could be attributed to the increasing number of students assigned per-teacher, thus reducing the time and energy a teacher can allocate towards each ward.

Who is an Ideal Teacher?

An ideal teacher remains a person who can incite curiosity in his/her pupil thereby forming an emotional connect with each and every student. An ideal teacher/guru is not just a subject matter expert who delivers lectures and hands out assignments. An ideal teacher prevents the brain drain of misguided youth, allows young minds to speak and think freely. He/she facilitates an environment in which learning becomes less conscious and ends up as a conscientious dialogue reminiscing what Vashistha had with Lord Rama, in Yoga Vashisthyam.

Teachers and our society

Teachers are that critical element of our society who are the real sculptors of our collective thought and actions. A teacher who connects with his/her students, offers them a way to harness their talents. A teacher offers encouragement to achieve our goals, and motivation for when we falter.
