Holistic Education and Its Growing Relevance in India

If a country like USA could produce a Steve Jobs, a Mark Zuckerberg, a Larry Page and a Bill Gates, amid a population of 317 million, shouldn’t India be producing eleven Sachin Tendulkars (inclusive of the original) with a population of 1.3 billion!

Hole – filling Holistic Education

Yes, our education system is designed for gaining a competitive edge. It is designed to surpass any or all other distractions a child has to live through in his/her growing years. Such a frenetic pursuit of beating competition, a race to the top, leaves a glaring hole in terms of the essential life lessons that our children miss out on. This gap, sadly, is being blissfully ignored in the book cramming education system of today’s India and tomorrow’s incredulity of the same country. Enabling children to learn the challenges of living as a whole, learning about themselves, about healthy relationships, about social responsibility and compassion are holes that need to be mended.

Is holistic education whole enough?

From Tagore to Amartya Sen, from Ruskin Bond to Vikram Seth, holistic education - well implemented, is what made those names connect with us today as nobility in education. Parents and children with limitations on purse strings and pursuit of limitless happiness, respectively, is a reality the parents of the quoted examples have been prone to enjoy. So, why not give our children, this holistic education, by making them connect to the community, nature and humanitarian values? Let’s turn them into wholesome beings. This school of thought is well drafted, but needs a firm hand for support. It needs a firmer heart for consideration, to abate any doubts about the future employment of our children.

  1. I had enrolled two of my children 6 months back at Redbridge International Academy. Being a new school we had kept our fingers crossed. Kudos to the super job by the school, I am a very happy mother to see both the children want to go to school every day.
